What is Full-Mouth Restoration?
Full-mouth restoration refers to complete replacement of all the missing teeth in any jaw. People who have lost all of their teeth, or most of their teeth, in either of the jaw or both the jaws, need a full-mouth teeth restoration.

Teeth loss may have been for different reasons such as extractions due to gross dental caries, dental trauma, or grinding of teeth due to bruxism.
Full-mouth restoration is also called ‘Full-mouth Rehabilitation” or ‘Full-mouth Reconstruction”.
What if Missing Teeth are Not Replaced?
Adults or older people with missing teeth can face plenty of problems in their social as well as personal life.
Some of the problems are:
- Inability to eat properly leading to mental disturbances
- Having inadequate food leading to nutritional deficiencies
- Impact on self-confidence and social embarrassments
- Significant jawbone loss making it further weak and atrophied
What are the different Full-mouth Restorations in Vietnam?
All-on-4® and All on 6/8 Dental Implants are different types of full-mouth restorations in Vietnam.
There was a trend towards minimally invasive implant treatment concepts. The treatments were primarily done to avoid bone grafting, even in the jawbone that has severely receded.
Such kind of treatment is aimed at providing:
- Best results with a shorter duration of treatment[3]International Journal of Implant Dentistry
What are different Full-mouth Restorations?
” For a few years, there has been a trend towards minimally invasive implant treatment concepts avoiding bone augmentation even in very atrophic edentulous jaws. These concepts aim to make an implant treatment with a shorter duration, with less inconvenience such as swelling or pain and possibly also economically more attractive”

All-on-4® Dental Implants
Four dental implants are placed in the jaw. These four implants support the set of teeth in that jaw.
Professor Paulo Malo from Lisbon, Portugal, invented the All-on-4® concept while it was successfully launched in 2004 by Nobel Biocare.[4]Nobel Biocare
All-on-4® Dental Implants
” In 1998 Dr. Paulo Malo successfully treated the first patient with the All-on-4® treatment concept. Since then hundreds of thousands of patients have been treated with this concept using Nobel Biocare implants.”

Of the four implants, two are inserted at 45 degrees, while the other two implants are erect. The technique can be used both in the upper and lower jaw to get a stable denture with minimum implants.
All-on-4® Dental Implants
” Published clinical studies evaluate the use of approximately 10,000 implants in 2500 patients in both edentulous mandible and maxilla, with followup times of up to 10 years.”

” Dental implants provide several advantages over other teeth replacement options. In addition to looking and functioning like natural teeth, implant-supported full bridges or dentures are designed to be long-lasting…to eat certain foods. “

Procedure for All-on-4
Under anesthesia, four dental implants are placed into the jawbone.
A provisional prosthesis is secured on the implants, till full healing takes place. Caution needs to be taken in eating hard or very chewy foods.
Once healing is complete, a permanent prosthesis, such as a dental bridge is fitted on the implants.
Post-procedure Care
There may be some discomfort and swelling after inserting the implants. However, for most patients, this discomfort subsides within a week.
Visit the dentist regularly in the first three months.
To prevent any complications, contact the dentist if there is anything unusual about the fitted implants.
Once the healing period is over, frequent visits are not required and chewing can be comfortably and confidently done.
Implantologists who are looking to improve treatment outcomes for their implant patients use the All-on-4® treatment concept. The concept is backed by over 20 years of clinical success.
All-on-6 and All-on-8 Dental Implants
In cases where four dental implants are not enough to take the load of forces of chewing, dentists recommend placing six or eight implants to support the crowns.
All-on-6/8 replace all the missing teeth with the insertion of six and 8 dental implants, respectively.
Many dentists are of the opinion that just like All-on-4®, placing six or eight implants too does not require bone grafting. Therefore, it is a perfect solution for those having a low bone density in their jawbone!
Benefits of All-on-6/8 Dental Implant:
- Quick recovery
- Shorter duration of treatment
- Reduced number of visits to the clinic
- Better ability to eat and speak
- Confident smile with a full-arch restoration
A thorough evaluation of the mouth is necessary before reaching a decision on the required number of implants.
All types of full-mouth restorations are performed with an objective to achieve similar results. However, based on some differences, your dentist will decide on what is best for you!
In general, it depends upon determining the ability of your jawbone to take the stresses of chewing.
Complete Removable Dentures
Complete Removable Dentures replacing all teeth in any jaw have been available for many years. In this type of denture, artificial teeth are fitted on a denture base.
Advantage: Low cost as compared to a full jaw restoration on dental implants.
Complete Removable Dentures Vs Dental Implants
The table below compares Complete Removable Dentures with Dental Implants.
Parameters | Complete Removable Denture | Dental Implants |
---|---|---|
Patient Preference | Less popular | More popular |
Esthetics | Unnatural look | Resembles natural teeth |
Cost | Low | High |
Retention in mouth | Can slip while talking/eating | Does not slip; comfortable |
Effect on jaw bone | Jawbone recedes | No recession of jawbone |
Long-term effect | Affects smile/face since jawbone deteriorates | Doesn’t affect smile/face in the long run |
Snap-On Denture
Snap-on dentures are also known as Overdenture or Implant-supported complete denture.
In this type of denture, two implants are inserted into the jawbone, and a denture is secured on to. This increases retention, stability, and comfort. It can be removed for cleaning.
The treatment is largely done in the lower jaw, where the traditional removable denture is seen to have less adhesion because of limited foundation and the tongue movements disturbing the denture and dislodging it.
Advantage:
There is limited bone loss in the jaw where the two implants are placed. This makes the Snap-on denture a more successful treatment in the long run.
