Some Useful Tips

  • Avoid driving at night and use the toll (cuota) roads whenever you can.
  • Avoid flashing expensive jewelry in public places.
  • Keep important documents in the hotel safe.
  • Be extra careful at the banks and ATMs. Avoid using ATMs at night.
  • Call 911 in case of emergency.
  • Do not hitchhike or offer rides to strangers.
  • Keep only as much money as you need for the day.
  • Always hire registered taxis and note the name of the driver and the registration number of the taxi for every ride.
  • Avoid going to the places that are notorious for drug war. While in Tijuana avoid Calle Coahuila. East side of the city, with neighborhoods like El Florido, Murua, Mariano Matamoros, among many others, should be avoided as well.

What are Mini Dental Implants?

  • People who don’t want removable dentures may consider mini implants to stabilize fixed crowns and bridgework.
  • Having the same structure as the regular implants, mini implants are slightly smaller in size and can be placed in one day.
  • These implants are narrower than other commonly used dental implants and are mostly used to support the lower denture.
  • They have two parts – a miniature titanium implant and a retaining fixture fused into the base of the denture.
  • The implant’s head is in a ball-like shape, and the retaining fixture is like a socket that contains a rubber O-ring. This fixture attaches the tooth to the post.
  • This option eliminates the need for expensive bone grafting procedures as mini implants require less bone.

Types

  • There are two common types of mini implants, namely self-tapping and self-drilling. They both are differentiated by predrilling.
  • Predrilling in self-tapping takes times and it might result in complications such as thermal damage, root damage, and drill fractures, while in the self-drilling variety it is done in less time with less thermal damage and fewer risks of fractures.
  • Self-drilling mini-implants are inserted with manual pressure without considerable irrigation.
  • The self-drilling system is beneficial with better stability, especially at sites with a lower bone density like the upper jaw and in adolescent patients. In contrast, it is not beneficial in high-density bone or thick cortical bone.

Caring for Mini Dental Implants

  • Mini dental implants don’t need any special care.
  • Just brushing the teeth twice and flossing once a day is enough.
  • A soft-bristled toothbrush should be used when the teeth recover from the procedure.
  • Smokers are at a greater risk of mini implant failure compared with nonsmokers. So, smoking should be avoided.
