Cause of Joint Pain - Rheumatoid Arthritis vs Osteoarthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are two common forms of arthritis. Although they can cause similar symptoms, there are some differences between the two.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease in which your immune system attacks your joints, especially the hands, wrists, and feet. People with rheumatoid arthritis can have joint stiffness that lasts for hours.[2]

Osteoarthritis is a chronic disease that also causes joints to become painful and stiff. The joints that are most often affected are the knee and hips. Problems in the small joints of the hands are also common.[3]

Osteoarthritis can have a significant impact on your quality of life and productivity. Chronic pain makes it challenging to complete even the simplest daily activities.

That is why osteoarthritis is the leading cause of disability worldwide.[4]

As discussed previously, there is no cure for these diseases. Many patients rely on painkillers, which have limited efficacy. Thus, the use of injections is a promising alternative to reduce inflammation and pain in your joints.[5]

New Gold Injections - For Rheumatoid Arthritis vs Osteoarthritis?

Doctors have been using gold injections to treat rheumatoid arthritis since the early 20th century. Injections made of gold salts, including auranofin and gold sodium thiomalate, were used to reduce joint pain and inflammation.

However, their use started to decline in the '90s due to the occurrence of side effects, giving place to other injections such as methotrexate, hyaluronic acid, platelet-rich plasma, and placental tissue matrix.[6]

In turn, Gold Particles Injection may help to reduce joint pain and inflammation in both conditions.

As Dr. Robert MacLauchlan explains in the following video, 20 milligrams of small gold particles are used to suppress the pain and the inflammation of joints only when needed.

These particles interact with the body’s immune system, stimulating the release of substances to stop pain and inflammation pathways.

The level of inflammation determines how much of the ion complexes are released from the microparticles.

“One of the greatest things about this treatment is that it allows people to have the freedom and mobility without the pain that they were experiencing before. We've had people be able to go up and down stairs, not just like one floor, but go up and downstairs at a lighthouse.”

- Dr. Robert MacLauchlan says.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for Gold Injections?

If you are thinking about whether you qualify for the treatment or now, then according to the doctors at Goldflex, you are an ideal candidate if you:

  • Severe or chronic osteoarthritis
  • You care on the verge of getting a knee replacement
  • If you are a professional athlete or paratrooper
  • If you have painful knees that have not responded to any other medical treatment

Patients with a high BMI should not consider this as a weight loss alternative. Gold injections for the knee improve the quality of life by decreasing the pain. This encourages a healthy life schedule which may help weight loss.

Plan Your Gold Injections Treatment in Mexico

The gold injection is a single sitting procedure. Your overall procedure will look like this

You will be required to submit the following documents before you fly to Mexico* for the Gold injection treatment for your Osteoarthritis:

  • Gold Flex Life Sciences Registration Forms (electronically fill-able PDF)
  • Copy of Passport
  • Previous medical history
  • Current X-Rays of affected joint(s)
  • COVID-19 test results; within 72 hours of departure or proof of vaccination

After the doctor approves your X-rays and lab reports, you will be prepped for the gold injections.

*Please Note: If you are arriving on the procedure day, please ensure that you reach well before your appointment time to avoid delays.

The doctor will put 20 micrograms of proprietory gold beads in your joints via an intra-articular route. These gold beads act as a drug delivery system for the gold ion complex released when the joint is inflamed.

You can head back home on the same day you receive your injections. This is an outpatient treatment.

According to the Goldflex team, patients can see the difference in the first hour of their injection. Still, you should wait for at least 3-5 days before you can see a major difference in your gait.

Gold is an inert metal, and it does not have any side effects. However, our doctors recommend that you refrain from heavy exercise or very long walks after the injections.

This is because you may not be using your leg muscles due to the chronic inflammation you had, which may have weakened your muscles.

So once the pain had subsided due to the gold microbeads, you may be tempted to move around, but over-usage of weakened muscles may cause muscle cramps.

What Are the Benefits of Gold Therapy?

A pilot study conducted at the Aalborg University Hospital, Aalborg, Denmark investigated the role of gold ions in treating knee osteoarthritis. Thirty patients with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis received a single injection of metallic gold (20 mg) into the knee joint. The researchers observed[8] the following benefits of the therapy:

An improvement in the WOMAC score - a self questionnaire that evaluates the condition of patients with knee and hip osteoarthritis

  • Improved joint pain
  • Improved joint function
  • An improvement in joint stiffness

The authors of the study concluded that intra-articular metallic gold improved joint pain, stiffness, and function. The therapy relieved pain and enhanced function in more than >80% of the patients.

*The new gold particle therapy came in 2017 for human use. The long-term results data is thus unavailable. As with any intra-articular injection, you may face minor discomfort for a few hours.

If you ask about complication rates, the Goldflex doctor says “To date, we have not seen any adverse effects in more than 100 people treated with Gold Flex treatment in Denmark.” This is a long way from a 50% complication rate[12] with old Gold injections and 9.5% (Hip) to 14.4% (Knee)[13] for joint replacement surgery.

Depending on your inflammation, the dose requirements may vary. In a study of 30 patients, 28 are pain-free to date. The treatment thus boasts a >80% success rate with a single shot.

Hyaluronic Acid vs Gold Injection

Hyaluronic Injection (HA)

Hyaluronic acid is shown to be a promising treatment for arthritic joint pain. Several studies have been conducted to prove the efficacy of these intra-articular injections.[14]

However, the main drawback of hyaluronic injections is that it only provides symptomatic benefit without the systemic[15]. Moreover, the effect wears off after 3- 5 weeks.

Therefore, to maintain the pain-free effect of HLA, multiple injections are needed.

The HA injections can have severe adverse events like septic arthritis.[16] Also, it is inadvisable for patients with the complete collapse of joint space or bone loss due to the poor clinical response.

Gold Injections

Gold injections belong to a special drug class known as disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). This means rather than providing symptomatic relief,  the gold injections cure the underlying problem which is the reason behind the discomfort.

A pilot study conducted at the University of Alborg, Denmark showed that the intra-articular injections in patients with osteoarthritis showed decreased inflammation and improved pain threshold.[17]

You require only a single, low-dose gold injection whose effects will be visible in 2-3 days of the treatment. Unlike other DMARDS or HA injections, you do not need multiple drug applications.
