Question – What are the types of surrogacy available in India?
Answer – IVF/Gestational surrogacy: In this type of surrogacy, the surrogate carries a pregnancy created by the egg and sperm of the genetic couple. The egg of the female partner is fertilized in vitro by the male partner’s sperm through IVF/ICSI. If fertilization happens and embryos are produced, they are transferred to the surrogate’s uterus. If the surrogate then becomes pregnant, the child so delivered is not genetically linked to the surrogate.
Traditional surrogacy: The surrogate is inseminated artificially or the IVF/ICSI procedure is performed with sperm from the male partner of an infertile couple. The child that is thus born is genetically related to the surrogate and to the male partner but not to the female partner.
The Indian Council of Medical Research does not recommend traditional surrogacy.
