Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are U.S. citizens allowed to enter Mexico?

Yes. Land border crossings between Mexico and the U.S. are open for essential travel (Individuals traveling for medical purposes). Air travel is allowed too.

2. Is the Covid test required for entry to Mexico?

It is not needed for land border crossings but for air travel.
Air Passengers are required to be tested (no longer than 3 days before departure) by airlines regardless of their vaccination status.

3. What types of Covid tests are acceptable for air travel?

Air travelers can either get an RT-PCR test, which costs more and takes a few days for results, or a Rapid Antigen test which is faster and comparatively cheaper.

4. Is the Rapid Antigen test acceptable for air travel?

Yes, it is. You can also get yourself tested for it at the airport. It costs approximately $100 in Mexico. The report is made available in 30 – 60 mins.
It is advisable to check with your airlines about the availability of rapid antigen tests.

5. Is the Covid test required when returning to the U.S.?

Covid test is not needed when returning to the U.S. via land border crossings.

In the case of Air travel, you will have to get tested no longer than 3 days before your departure. The airline checks a negative result before flight boarding. For example, if your flight is at 1 pm on a Friday, you could board with a negative test taken any time before Tuesday or after.

6. Are RT-PCR or Rapid Antigen Tests available for U.S. citizens in Mexico?

Yes.

7. Where can you get a Covid test in Mexico?

Hospitals/Hotels across the country are helping coordinate tests for their patients/guests on-site or at nearby labs.

8. Is the Covid test cost covered in your medical package cost?

9. If you have gotten the Covid-19 vaccine, is the Covid test still needed while returning to the U.S.?

Yes.

10. How is the Covid situation in Mexico?
