Laparoscopic gastric banding also known as (lap band surgery) is a minimally invasive weight loss surgery. An adjustable band is placed around the stomach to restrict food intake & helps patient feel full sooner.

The band is a hollow ring filled with saline that can be adjusted with more or less saline to create a smaller or larger opening. With lap band surgery, there is no cutting or stapling of the stomach and there is no intestinal rerouting.

The operation is completed in a relatively short period of time (approximately 1 hour) and with minimal blood loss. Below is FDA approved Lap Band System.

Anesthesia & Blood Transfusion for Lap band

General Anesthesia is administered. Patients rarely require a blood transfusion after Lap-Band surgery. Following surgery, patients are monitored in a recovery room for approximately 3 to 6 hours before being discharged from the hospital. Recovery times vary depending upon the individual patient.

Hospital Stay & Post Lap Band Care

Lap band surgery involves a hospital Stay of about 1 to 2 days [many places it's persormed as an outpatient procedure]. The patient is encouraged patients to walk as soon and as much as possible after their surgery. The nutrition plan will be a liquid diet for a few weeks, until patient can tolerate soft foods, and later solid foods.

Following surgery, patients will be given pain medication for use at home. Most individuals experience only mild discomfort, which is generally relieved by the pain medicine. The patient can be back to work in about 3 weeks. Most patients feel some fatigue and weakness for 3-5 days but are able to return to normal functions after about 5-7 days.

The patient will also notice huge changes in their eating habits. They will feel full or satisfied after consuming a much smaller portion of food than they did prior to surgery. Once the patient feels full then it is recommended to stop eating, as overeating can trigger pain and/or nausea. In addition, doctors recommend that patients eat slowly and chew your food carefully.

There will be a certain amount of restrictions on the patient's food and physical activities. Certain type of foods like dried fruits, asparagus, pineapple, rhubarb, corn, nuts and seeds are hard on the stomach for some patients after the surgery. Furthermore, walking is great exercise to start out with following the surgery. After 6 weeks patient may do any exercise you would like - aerobics, bicycling, running, strength conditioning, etc.

Benefits of lap band surgery

Most patients that underwent lap band surgery have lost about 50% of their excess weight within the first year. In addition, the associated medical problems, such as diabetes, arthropathy, sleep apnea, or high blood pressure, have improved or disappeared completely after their lap band surgery.

Some of the other benefits of lap band surgery are:

  • Done without a large incision.
  • Reduces the risk of infection as it does not require any opening in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Adjustable and can be customized to individual needs.
  • No additional surgery required to optimize weight loss
  • It is fully reversible. The band can be emptied or it can be removed, for example, during pregnancy or prolonged illness allowing your stomach to return to former state.
  • The person can fully digest vitamins and minerals
  • Widely used around the world and accepted well by most persons of all ages and physical conditions.
  • Short hospital stay

Cost of Lap Band in the USA Versus Abroad

As much as it provides innumerous benefits to any patient undergoing the surgery, lap band surgery is much more complex to perform. Given the complexity of the surgery as well as the immense benefits of a successful surgery, it is not surprising that the lap band surgery costs are also on the higher side. In the U.S. lap band surgery will cost anywhere between $13,000 and $30,000.

Low cost lap band surgery has been performed outside of the United States much longer than it has been performed in the United States. In fact, while lap band surgery started in USA in 2001 after FDA approval, it has been successfully performed worldwide since 1996. There are many reputable facilities and skilled surgeons performing lap band surgery outside the USA, including India, Mexico, Spain, Belgium and Costa Rica.

Mexico is a viable option for U.S patients due to the proximity in geographical terms. Also, lap band surgery in Mexico is significantly lower with respect to cost when compared to USA. The cost for the same surgery in Mexico is $6,500. Even after considering travel and lodging expenses, a 50% to 60% cost savings can be achieved.

India, on the other hand, is geographically very far but in terms of cost it is more or less similar to Mexico. The attraction about India is the English-speaking pool of U.S. and U.K. educated surgeons and the state of the art equipment used in the hospitals. In addition, India is a hot tourist attraction with thrills and delights of the east to satisfy any personality type.

Cost of Lap Band Surgery Versus Gastric Bypass

Lap band surgery is not the only procedure that is used for reducing obesity. Gastric bypass surgery is also used to achieve similar results. However, there is a significant difference in the procedures, guarantees and hence, the costs.

While a lap band surgery in U.S. will cost anywhere between $13,000 and $30,000, gastric bypass surgery starts upward from $28,000. Even with zero complications, the most common form of weight loss surgery -- laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery -- can cost from $25,000 to $35,000, or more. In many cases, the patients end up paying between $50,000 and $80,000.

Gastric Bypass is both a restrictive and malabsorptive procedure that has been performed worldwide for over 35 years. The costs associated with gastric bypass surgery are higher because it is a full surgical procedure requiring a full surgical team including a qualified bariatric surgeon, surgical assistants, an anesthetist and a multi-disciplinary team with a psychologist, nutritionist and other specialists. In addition, hospitalization is required for at least 2 to 3 days followed by a 2 to 4 week recovery period.

Lap band surgery, on the other hand, is performed under general anesthesia and lasts only between 30 minutes and 1 hour. It does not demand a full team of half a dozen specialized surgeons but a small general team with the specialized doctor doing the surgery. Hospital stay is very short (does not exceed 48 hours) compared to gastric bypass surgery. Hence lap band surgery costs much lesser than gastric bypass.

Personal Price of Obesity

Obese people are at a disadvantage, says Los Angeles Times. A study reported by the paper illustrated how obese people spend much more than an average person while receiving much lesser.

Overweight people have many reasons that ensure their expenses are above average. And nothing in their life is as responsible for their increased expenditure year-by-year as much as their obesity. Let's take a few examples.

Out-of-pocket medical expenses for the obese are higher than for those of normal weight. And the worst part is this expense is not reimbursed. The obese are likely to have lower incomes due in part to a reduced probability of holding managerial level job, more missed days from work, and a reduced likelihood of holding a college degree.

Like themselves, the obese are likely to have spouses with lower incomes — that is, if they are married at all, this is less likely than for those of normal weight. Obesity demands extra-sturdy furniture and diet services and weight loss systems, all of which can be very expensive.

Taking a conservative estimate, obese people will have the following expenses. Their drugs and other medical procedures will cost them about $7500 per year. Add in $2500 for out-of-pocket healthcare expenses and about $1000 for employment inactivity costs. Commercial weight-loss program fees will cost $800 and all those extra groceries and dining could demand about $6500 annually.

That's approximately $18,300 additional expenses just because of obesity! And this is an annual figure and surely subject to increases due to inflation with each passing year. A low cost lap band surgery in countries like India, Mexico and Costa Rica cost HALF of that amount!

Having weight loss surgery is a life-changing decision and it has been successful in bringing about a refreshing change in many people's personal and social life. Low cost lap band surgery is available overseas for people who find the lap band surgery cost beyond their financial limits.
