Medical Tourism India
Medical Tourism, also referred to as medical value travel, is
a process of going abroad to seek cost effective and timely medical or surgical
care for specialized medical needs. With escalating costs of medical care
in the Untied States and with several healthcare services not under the preview
of medical insurance, increasing number of Americans are finding it difficult
to sustain their healthcare costs. Medical tourism is considered as an option,
especially, since going abroad to seek medical care allows cost savings to
the tune of 25% to 75% depending upon the country and the intervention. As
per estimates, medical travel to India is exponentially increasing, when compared
with other medical tourism destinations across the world.

Medical Tourism in India:
In the recent past, with privatization of healthcare services (private sector
controls about 80% of the healthcare market in India), enormous and massive
growth of infrastructure, improving technological support and facilities,
and increasing awareness regarding quality and international accreditations
like JCI and JACHO, India has emerged as a strong contender in the medical
tourism market. With increasing dominance of the private sector and most corporate
hospitals expanding across all regions in India, has created a comprehensive
network of healthcare providers with a strong and increasing consciousness
regarding quality of medical care.
Furthermore, India is the home of the largest pharmaceutical industry in
the world, which has a self sufficient drug production, and exports drugs
to over 180 countries across the globe. The strongest advantage in favor of
India is its ability to provide international quality of medical care at the
lowest rates, in comparison with any other part of Asia. In addition to saving
costs, health tours to India, can save significant amount of time and the
required surgical / medical care can be sought almost instantaneously on arrival.
Medical tourism industry in India is projected to capture 2.5% of the international
medical tourism market by 2012,
with concurrent revenue projects of $ 2.3 billion. Medical tourism in India
is estimated to attract over 1.1 million patients from across the globe, who
are in search of more cost effective and good quality medical care options,
by the end of 2012.
The Indian Advantage
As the largest country in the Indian Subcontinent, health tourism to India
has several advantages. Few of the major advantages include,
- Considerably lower costs of medical care services, which on an average,
is about 30% lower than the costs in the United States, and is the cheapest
destination in South East Asia
- India has the largest English speaking population in the world. This
enhances and improves effective communication between the patient and the
medical team. Fluency with English also makes India a preferred spot for
leisure travel and sight seeing, which is invariably combined with medical
tourism.
- There are several Indian hospitals, that are registered with international
accreditation boards like JCI (Joint Commission International), JACHO or
are ISO certified. This ensures that the quality of medical care services
in these internationally accredited hospitals is at par with American standards.
- India has several super specialty hospitals dedicated to providing cardiology
and cardiothoracic surgery, orthopedic surgery ( including knee and hip
replacement surgery), transplant surgery ( including liver, kidney, etc),
cancer surgery ( including chemotherapy and radiation therapy), cosmetic
and dental care. With a gigantic boost in medical tourism, India has seen
an upsurge of private sector hospitals dedicated to the treatment of international
patients.
- Most of the leading Indian hospitals are strongly supported and equipped
with full body pathology, biochemistry services like cancer and coronary
risk markers, diagnostic and imaging services which include the latest technological
innovations like PET scan, CT scan. The cost of diagnostic and imaging service
is also considerably lower compared to the hospitals in American, whilst
the quality of service including timeliness and quality of reports are of
international standards. Most of these diagnostic centres are also certified
by international accreditation agencies like CAP
- Highly skilled, experienced and trained doctors, physicians and surgeons
of international fame and repute, for performing the most complicated surgeries
and procedures, has helped India gain a strong and powerful position in
the international medical tourism market. Further, the doctors are supported
by a strong, comprehensive and well trained paramedical force comprising
of nurses, technicians, attendants, clinical coordinators, nutritionists,
etc
- With options like surrogate pregnancies and infertility treatments, Indian
hospitals provide comprehensive Assisted Reproductive Technology services,
which has made India the first choice for the management of infertility
among American patients.
Vacationing in India
Health tours to India are often accompanied with leisure and relaxation travel
by many American patients. As per available data, India has seen an influx
of over 5 million foreign tourists in 2007 which is estimated to double by
the end of 2010. It is estimated that the Indian share to the international
tourism market will rise to 1.5% by the year 2010. There are several factors
which have attributed to this growth, which include a boom in associated industries
including hotel industry, hospitality, aviation industry and medical tourism
industry.
The country is the seventh largest country in the world with extremely diverse,
varied, and complex cultures, traditions, values and a rich and glorifying
history. The geographic and tropical differences are apparent, with perennially
snow capped Himalayas, breathtakingly beautiful valleys, and gorgeous waterfalls
in the north, the dry and arid deserts in the West, the humid deltas of the
Ganges in the East, and beautiful sun kissed beaches, fringed with swaying
palms in the southern Indian Peninsula. The country is also the home of innumerable

has been enhanced and upgraded which has lead to a boom in inter state transport.

hardly over four hours.

to stereotype Indian food which comprises of a variety of herbs, spices, vegetables
and fruits across the country. It is a predominantly a vegetarian country,
though one can find non-vegetarian foods readily, which are equally spicy
and tasty. Due to the sheer size of the country and different linguistic practices,

the country. To simplify, Indian cuisine is categorized into six basic tastes
which include spicy, sour, sweet, bitter, salty and astringent. Across the
different techniques and assortment patterns Indian dish comprises of all

Pointers to Medical Tours to India
Prior to embarking upon a medical travel visit to India, it is essential
to consider certain facts.
- Maintain a good hygiene while your visit to India. The hospitals are clean
and have strong infection control protocols and so do most of the leading
hotels here, however, as you travel outside it is of essence, that you keep
a small bottle containing benzalkonium chloride, to ensure that your hands
are clean prior to meals. This is vital, since chances of feco - oral contamination
is significantly high.
- Don't eat outside, except at large and famous restaurants. Eating road
side food or food at low end restaurants has to be completely avoided, although
the food may appear very tempting!
- It is best that you drink bottled water. Though hospitals and top end
hotels do take care of the quality of water, it is best to avoid it, considering
that your immune system may not be tuned to their standards.
- Air pollution is at its peak at most of the metros and larger cities,
though smaller towns and rural India has very clean, fresh, and invigorating
air. If you are an asthmatic or are prone to upper respiratory tract infections,
please make sure that you carry your medications with you.
- Carry ATM cards or international credit cards, which will help you, make
payments with ease. Though your cards will be accepted at most of the places
in metros and urban India, if you plan to visit rural India, it is best
you carry some cash with you for an emergency. Always keep change, as most
people will not have enough cash to pay the balance.
- The best season to visit India is from November to March, when the country
is relatively cooler. Summers are extremely hot in most parts of the country,
except for the far North and North Eastern Region. Monsoons across most
of the country are during the months - June to September, though certain
parts of the country receive rains during October and November.
- Overall Indians are helpful, friendly and largely conventional in their
ways and means. They are very helpful to foreigners (though you will have
to be careful of the opportunistic conman) and would be willing to interact.
Try talking and interacting with them. It will enhance the experience of
your visit to the great country
