In this assisted reproduction procedure the oocytes (egg cells) are fertilized by sperm outside womb in a test tube or Petri dish. The following are the steps in a typical IVF Treatment:
- Administration of fertility medicines.
- Monitoring of the cycle using Sonography(ultrasound vaginal scans). The response of the ovaries to the fertility medicines is monitored and adjusted.
- Collection of eggs. This involves an ultrasound guided egg collection to suck out the fluid from the follicle which contains the eggs.
- Fertilization. Involves mixing eggs and the male sperm together outside the woman's body in a culture dish or test-tube.
- Embryo Transfer (embryo replacement): In 2 to 5 days after the fertilization takes place, the best 2-3 embryos are transferred into the woman's womb.
Any remaining embryos of good quality may then be frozen (cryopreserved) for future use. {In case ivf is required to be performed again on the same patient, these good quality embryos can be used, saving time, drug expenses and being more convenient}
